How much breathability do you need on the mountain
EVERYONE NEEDS TO BREATH. BUT HOW MUCH?
Is more better? Does size matter? It depends on how active you are. You might like easy riding, up at 10 am, down at 3 pm to hit Après while having a long lunch and love nothing more than using the lifts. In that case, you might not need a very breathable jacket or pant. You could get away with a rating of 5,000 to 9,000 grams
One way to look at it is this. You will be wearing some form of a layer. At some stage, this will capture moisture. (Read more about layers here) It needs to escape. In cold, dry weather a highly breathable shell will lead to vapour exiting the wearer’s body, leading to loss of body heat. Layers can become just as important to your jacket, and your jacket needs to breathe.
If you are a powder hound and get off the beaten track in the side or backcountry, or you love being a park rat, you are going to break a sweat. You will need a rating from 15K upwards. If you live in the backcountry, know what skinning and split boarding are and talk about how many thousand vertical feet you crushed in a day while ordering your third round at Après, you need your garments to be 20K.
