Sweden’s most underrated ski getaway
Known as one of Sweden’s smaller and more intimate ski areas, Idre Fjäll isn’t any less entertaining than nearby resorts in the region. Located in central Sweden, the ski resort features countless winter and summer activities for everyone. Idre Fjäll sits relatively close to cities like Stockholm, Oslo, and Trondheim. However, the ski town is located closest to the town of Mora, Sweden – which is about 150km (93mi) from Idre Fjäll.
If the name of this small Swedish ski town sounds familiar, it might be because Idre Fjäll has been a stop on the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup tour for the last four years. Labeled as one of the most exciting stops on the tour, the resort has made a name for itself in the ski cross world. With a unique course layout and short northern days, Idre Fjäll proves to be one of the most exciting events each year. This past year played no exception, as the event lead right into the 2019 Utah FIS Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships.
In Idre Fjäll, you can find skiing in all four directions – giving you access to many different runs to choose from. With several chairlifts and plenty more Poma Lifts, the small ski resort has plenty to offer with over 40 runs spread across the mountain. The top of Idre Fjäll stands at about 890m (2,920ft) and features about 307m (1,007ft) of vertical drop. Moreover, the ski resort features one of steepest runs in Sweden (Chocken - which has a 46-degree pitch). Across 34 different lifts, there is plenty to explore while you’re on the mountain – and you’ll have no trouble finding your limit.
However, if you get bored of the skiing then there’s plenty of other activities to enjoy during your stay in Idre Fjäll. With activities such as snow racing, dog sledding, snowmobile tours, snowshoe walks, horse and sleigh rides, and base camping – there’s a little something for everyone here. If that’s not sufficient, there’s also year-round access to the sports hall, bowling alley, indoor pool, gym, and activity center. If you catch it right, Idre Fjäll also hosts several concerts and special events throughout the year. Lastly, there’s always night skiing for those who can’t get enough of the terrain in Idre Fjäll.
It won’t be hard to make yourself at home in Idre Fjäll, with various accommodation options available in the village. Between cabins, apartments, and hotel rooms, the resort offers a variety of different lodging that will fit any vacation. Plus, all of the accommodation is very centrally located – making everything walking distance to and from the hill. At the Pernilla Wiberg Hotel, guests will enjoy spacious rooms; as well as a restaurant, lounge, relaxation area and amazing views to top it all off.
Important to mention that Idre Fjäll has all of the cafes and restaurants you could need, seeing that a ski vacation isn’t complete without good food. If you’re looking for fine dining and family restaurants, there are several spots located both on and off the mountain. The Restaurant Utsikten is a must for lunch while you’re on the hill, and Torget Grill & Bar is one of the better dinner spots found the village. If you choose to stay at the Pernilla Wiberg Hotel, then the PW kitchen & bar is conveniently located right in the hotel – and offers both breakfast and á la carte.
Furthermore, Idre Fjäll has a lively Aprés ski scene; complete with music, dancing, and socializing for everyone. Between Charlies and Vildmarksnästet, there’s plenty to do after a long day on the hill. If you want to keep it going into the night, you can even step over to Ingemars – where you’ll find more of a club scene. Lastly, there’s always something for the kids in Idre Fjäll. Fäbodcaféet tends to be the kid’s favorite since this cozy café serves freshly made waffles as well as several other treats daily. With so many great options for food in this small village, it’ll be hard to pick your favorite spot by the end of the trip.
Open from about mid-December to late-April, Idre Fjäll provides some of the premier skiing in Sweden for several months out of the year.
